Outreach & Education

Wendy shared the outreach event schedule for the next four months, including family events, teacher workshops, and Kids 4 Collections workshops at the Iziko Museum. She highlighted the launch of a kelp forest trail in the Western Cape and mentioned a new puppet module on Table Mountain's formation. Wendy also discussed the involvement of university students in staffing these events and expressed interest in expanding outreach to Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

• 2025 is ISAM's (Iziko) bicentenial year with lots of programs starting up on 18 May (International Museum Day) with a big launch on 11 June their "establishment day"

• We will be running another GIFT teacher workshop this year on 16-17 August

• Topic will be the Water Cycle

• Starting a new Saturday kids science club at Iziko in June

• VFT work is planned to start in mid-May in the Great Karoo with the Field Museum of Natural History and Iziko teams

Education and outreach activities through Puppet Planet NPC in August-October 2024:

1. GIFT Workshop with 55 teachers, Exploring Antarctica, weekend of 10-11 August at the Iziko Museum and Two Oceans Aquarium

2. International Astronomical Union General Assembly meeting sponsored childrens puppetry program Exoplanet Explorers, Iziko Museum, 7,8,12,13 August 2024

3. Launched two new robot puppet characters and a storyline on the search for life in the Universe

4. Fieldwork on new project with the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago, USA), 4-7 September in Karoo near Neu-Bethesda

5. Recorded educational videos with scientist Claire Browning

The Friends of Iziko Museum have asked me to lead a GeoHike along the Promenade later this year, after my annual overnight trip for them to Robben Island, set for 5th and 6th April this year.

A few weeks ago I spoke on The Geology the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to retirees of the Blaauwberg University of the Third Age (U3A).  100 attended in the beautiful Milnerton Public Library.

On Monday, 11th March, I shall give a lunchtime talk to our Groote Schuur Probus Club on GeoTourism in Great Britain and Ireland, based on our 2013 and 2019 pre-Covid trips.
