Update from Cam:
The appointment of 4 students is in progress. the students start work in February 2024. They will be assisting in the creation of databases that will be linked to the app, specifically on the interactive geology layer. We hope to complete the million map layer by May with the national 250k geological map layer by December 2024.
Geodyssey (and hopefully Wits) has partnered with Marcia van Aswegen and Alan Goldsmith at Sable who will be helping us construct and curate our database trees. These will pull from a data server hosted at Wits University to display on the app.
In terms of geosites, I have logged at least 400 geosites across South Africa that are of some interest. Later this year, the team will whittle these down to a more manageable number with information.
Other targeted geosites and detailed maps that are scoped for production at present include Mellville Koppies, Joburg Dome, Tswaing Crater, Vredefort and the White uMfolozi.
We will be working with Wendy and Len to bring VFT's to the app, beginning with the Gansfontein palaeosurface site.
