During the weekend of 26-27 August, the Iziko South African Museum hosted the annual GIFT (Geoscience Information for Teachers) Workshop - a program sponsored by the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The program focused on the topic of the origin of water on Earth - "Water in Space and Time" - and featured amazing speakers from the University of Cape Town (BIOGRIP program and the Geological Sciences, Oceanography and Biological Sciences Departments), the University of Virgina (USA), the Iziko South African Museum and Two Oceans Aquarium.
Teachers spent a day and half at the Iziko Musuem, with the last afternoon spent at the Two Oceans Aquarium where they participated in hands-on explorations of exhibits, live animals in touch tanks, and they disected a kep holdfast - identifying the animals that emerged! Teachers had the wonderful opportunity to work with Two Oceans Director of Education Ms. Bianca Engel, Professor George Branch (UCT Biological Sciences) and his wife, Ms. Margo Branch.
We would like to give special thanks the EGU Education Committe, the Iziko South African Museum, Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, Geological Society of South Africa Headquarters and the Western Cape Branch for supporting this event! Thank you!
